Development Manager, Analytics

A Development Manager, Analytics, at Verimatrix participates in the creation of a large product suite that enables video analytics for video content delivered via satellite, cable, or the Internet for the company and our customers.  The development manager collaborates with teammates and other teams to deliver high-performing, scalable, high-quality products.  The person should enjoy developing new data platform capabilities working through the SDLC and working with data.  A successful manager will be proactive, interactive, creative, and flexible, and should understand the value of servant-leadership, while striving to build a collaborative, high-performing technical team that is focused on delivering next generation analytics products.  S/he will need to learn and understand the entire Verimatrix product suite as well as gain a deep technical knowledge of data platform components in the that suite.

This position reports to the Director of Analytics Development within the Engineering Department

Some tasks the Development Manager, Analytics, will perform: 

  • Manage the development of analytics software products, following company processes and cadence, including:
    • participating in scope definition for the products
    • driving the technical direction of the software products (in conjunction with the Architects and Product Managers)
    • scheduling product versions
    • managing a team of engineers
    • overseeing the development of documentation to support the products
    • coordinating with QA leads and manager(s) to ensure the effective testing of the products
  • Work with remote development teams and coordinate tasks
  • Facilitate interaction between their team and other departments
  • Juggle high-visibility, customer facing projects
  • Develop a world-class software engineering team by:
    • recruiting, training, and mentoring software engineers and other technical specialists reporting to the Development Manager
    • providing meaningful performance feedback to his/her direct reports including annual personnel reviews
    • working with each direct report to set and achieve annual goals 
    • fostering a culture of autonomy and accountability within the team and by forging and cultivating strong and lasting partnerships with other teams at the company
    • promoting leadership values
    • enabling team to be successful as a team, as engineers and software developers
  • Empower teams to meet the product and project objectives
  • Interact with other Development Managers to ensure compatibility with other company produced software
  • Coordinate software releases and remove roadblocks for the team
  • Understand, in detail, the complexity and intricacies of engineering software development methodologies and software development plan(s)
  • Plan and organize regular team training and team meetings as needed
  • Participate and lead others in achieving department goals
  • Coordinate third tier technical support and provide assistance to our technical support team
  • Review, edit, and approve software requirements documents for software products under the Development Manager’s jurisdiction
  • Review, edit, and approve engineering documentation, such as installation prerequisites, installation instructions, developer guides, and user and administrator guides.
  • Manage issues in the corporate issue management system for the software products under the Development Manager’s jurisdiction
  • Create and maintain software product project plan(s) as necessary and ensure that the plan is maintained and communicated to key personnel and appropriate work groups on a regular basis.
  • Participate in setting and maintaining the department budget
  • Work with the Director to develop and implement Engineering Department policies and procedures
  • Ensure that all Engineering policies and procedures are fully explained and implemented and that the team adheres to all Engineering policies and procedures
  • Develop and maintain departmental performance standards
  • Other assignments as may be provided

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum two years of experience leading a team of 8-20 software engineers or other technical specialists (DBAs, configuration managers, etc.) or five years of experience leading a smaller team (8 or less)
  • Minimum one year experience working on mission critical software
  • Minimum five years of experience in data and/or software engineering/development in a full lifecycle environment as a software engineer
  • Minimum two years of programming and/or data analysis experience 
  • Capable of analyzing and interpreting professional literature or technical procedures
  • Must be an effective communicator both verbally and in written language with experience in writing reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals
  • Must have a thorough understanding of software engineering practices including a demonstrated commitment to software engineering best practices required
  • Self-directed and independent worker and manager.  Must be able to take directions from supervisor, flush it out, and implement it with their team without direct supervision
  • Must be able to communicate with both technical and non-technical people including clients and vendors
  • Must be able to lead meetings and present to groups of at least 25 people 
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field

Each of the Following would be a Plus:

  • Familiarity with some of the following technologies:
    • relational DBs (Oracle, Teradata, Netezza, etc)
    • NoSQL data stores (Hadoop, HBase, Cassandra, ElasticSearch)
    • AWS services (Kinesis, Redshift, Lambda, etc)
    • other technologies such as Docker, Spark, ETL tools (Informatica, Alteryx, Talend, etc)
  • Data science
  • Data Warehousing and Data Lake concepts, techniques and best practices
  • Video or media and entertainment industry experience
  • Experience working in an agile software environment (particularly Scrum and/or Kanban)
  • Object-oriented design and programming experience
